Sparks Marina
Sparks
The Sparks Marina offers residents a beach, playground, walking trail, dining and picnic areas.
By Brandi Schlossberg
SINCE THE START OF 2006, the city of Sparks has experienced
population growth greater than the
national average.

Last year, Sparks grew
at a rate of 4.8 percent, the highest in
Washoe County for the fi fth year in a row,
according to the state demographer’s offi ce.
“The city of Sparks is growing up,” said
Mayor Geno Martini in his March 2006
State of the City Speech. “Just as the city
of Henderson is no longer a bedroom
community to Las Vegas, the city of Sparks
is no longer a bedroom community to
Reno.”
City offi cials aren’t sitting back
and celebrating the popularity of this
community three miles east of Reno.
They’re actively adapting the “City of
Promise” to meet the needs of a growing
population.
“Our city’s population today is more
than 85,600 and growing,” Mayor Martini
said. “By the end of the decade, we could
have more than 100,000 people living in
Sparks.”
City offi cials already have started
working with the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Regional Transportation
Commission to increase roadway capacity and provide public transportation to and from
downtown Sparks, where major revitalization plans are underway.
VICTORIAN SQUARE: AN URBAN VILLAGE
“Last year we adopted a new development plan for Victorian Square, primarily for urban
residential use,” says Armando Ornelas, redevelopment manager for the City of Sparks. “There
will be people living, working, recreating and shopping in a compact area — what we refer to as
an urban village.”
