Rural counties holding onto character despite growth

U.S. 50 Alternate, the highway connecting Fernley (Lyon County's northernmost incorporated city) with Fallon, is going through a long-awaited expansion from two to four lanes.

And the region desperately needs the extra traffic capacity. Not only do both cities feed commuters into Reno, but Fernley also has seen more residents and more local employment in recent years. Meanwhile, accidents on U.S. 50 between Dayton, another swiftly growing area in northwest Lyon County, and Carson City continue to rise, sparking calls for better traffic management and more aggressive enforcement among residents and community officials.

More sedate levels of growth are taking place in the southern end of Lyon County, with a handful of new homes being built in and around Yerington, the county seat.
