![]() Fallon Naval Air Station Churchill County - Fallon Rural counties holding onto character despite growth Although most of Churchill County’s population — 17,708 people out of 26,106, according to the 2004 estimates from the Nevada state demographer’s office — lives outside the Fallon city limits, more than 90 percent live within a 10 minute drive of the county’s only incorporated city and its U.S. Navy air base. And while the city and the county traditionally log low growth rates — 2004’s figures were a mere 1.2 percent above 2003’s — there has been enough growth over the past five years to bring in new-home developers as well as business investors. Not only are subdivisions being built, some with more than 700 homes, but businesses continue to stretch west along U.S. 50. “As more people are coming into Fallon, it’s harder to make a left-hand turn,” said Tom Lammel, who owns Lahontan Manufactured Homes in Fallon and serves on the Churchill County Planning Commission. Fortunately, the people who are buying these homes, and the people allowing the homes to be built, are willing to hold the line against the potential negative effects of development. “Most of the people who are moving in have experienced the negative pressures of life where they were, and they have no interest in bringing those here,” Lammel said. For now, Churchill County’s balanced lifestyle seems to have something for everyone. |
