![]() Downtown Fallon Churchill County - Fallon Roadways indicate paths of growth To understand growth in Storey, Lyon and Churchill counties, all you need to do is look at the roads. The expansion of one highway, the creation of a second and calls to calm traffic on a third show how tricky it can be for smaller towns to deal with their growing pains. Of course, some areas have had an easier time adjusting than others. In the city of Fallon, for instance, longtime resident Rick Lattin sees a generally positive growth trend. “The good news about Fallon is we haven’t had the massive spurts of growth that the areas around us have had,” says Lattin, owner of Lattin Farms, whose family settled in the area in 1908. “We’ve had slow, consistent growth, so we’ve had a better opportunity to deal with it.” FALLON AND CHURCHILL COUNTY Fallon, the seat of Churchill County, continues to add to its population. Having a major military base — Naval Air Station Fallon, home to a host of premiere naval aviation training squadrons — helps draw in residents, but the area’s agricultural base also is centered around “Nevada’s Oasis.” The biggest growth events in Fallon include the recent opening of a Super Wal-Mart store and the construction of new subdivisions throughout the area. That growth has presented the city and county with increased demands for clean water, expanded sewer capacity and other services. “I think they’re really trying to keep it growing at a level where they can handle the infrastructure needs, which can be hard,” says Shirley Walker, executive director of the Churchill Economic Development Authority. RESIDENT VIGNETTE: “The good news about Fallon is we haven’t had the massive spurts of growth that the areas around us have had. We’ve had slow, consistent growth, so we’ve had a better opportunity to deal with it.” • Rick Lattin, Fallon |
