![]() The historic Odeon Hall Dayton Nevada's first settlement Dayton is nestled in a fertile valley east of Carson City. The Dayton area makes up the entire valley and the Dayton Highway 50 corridor from the outskirts of Carson City to Silver Springs, Nevada. It is an oasis in western Nevada’s high-desert country. Dayton is the earliest settlement in the state, originating with settlers attracted by gold in the area, and the Carson River which runs through it. The Carson River, named after the mountain man Kit Carson, flows through Dayton from the Sierra Nevada mountains, across the Lyon County desert, to the Lahontan Reservoir ending at the Carson Sink. The Carson River provides an area for canoeing, rafting, fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing along the swimming and boating at Lahontan Reservoir. Old Dayton remains the quaint little Nevada mining town, but the growth of the surrounding area puts a new spin on its history. In January 1999, a supermarket opened the door for a shopping complex. In 1999, Dayton also celebrated its 150th years since the discovery of gold. |
