Reno Championship Air Races Announces Heritage Trophy

The National Championship Air Races (NCAR) in association with Rolls Royce and the National Aviation Hall of Fame are proud to announce the First Annual National Heritage Invitational. The objective of the Heritage Invitational is to encourage the preservation of aviation history and the restoration of vintage aircraft to airworthy condition. Participating vintage aircraft will be judged on technical merit developed by the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum and must be of a type flying at least 45 years prior to the year of entry and may not be a participant in the air races.

A special category has been created for a "People's Choice" award. Spectators at this year's Championship Air Races will be able to vote for their favorite vintage aircraft.

The owner of the winning airplane will be presented with a trophy created for this event. The trophy is called the Rolls Royce Aviation Heritage Trophy provided by Rolls-Royce North America, Inc. and created especially for this event.

Applications for entry in the First Annual Aviation Heritage Invitational must be submitted to the Reno Air Racing Association no later than August 6. Only 50 aircraft will be selected.

A plaque on the trophy will show the name of the owner of the winning aircraft, as well as the aircraft type and restoration facility, where appropriate each year. The trophy will be displayed at the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio. When the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum's facility at the Washington Dulles International Airport is opened in 2003, the trophy will reside in alternate years in that facility.
