Reno - Sparks - Tahoe

Reno/Sparks/Tahoe has maintained a competitive advantage due to the cooperative efforts between public and private sectors. The University of Nevada System provides a multitude of support services to new, expanding and established companies, which aslo benefit from the university's research collaboration, internship and technology transfer programs.

University of Nevada, Reno (UNR)

Manufacturing Assistance Partnership (MAP)

MAP is a focused, industrial networking and extension service housed within the University and Community College System of Nevada(UCCSN). Our primary goal is to provide Nevada's industrial business community with direct and referral assistance for workforce development, business systems improvement and technical consulting. MAP employs six Field Engineers with expertise and commitment to manufacturing, mining and construction. It promotes education, cooperation and communication between Nevada manufactuers and the University System (775) 829-9000.

Bureau of Business and Economic Research

This Bureau provides a broad array of funded research and consulting opportunities. It generates reports for local, state, national businesses & governmental entities. Publications on business and economic topics are published regularly. This center serves the needs of those who require current business and economic information about the region, state and nation. Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

SBDC provides low-cost business management training and counseling for new and expanding businesses throughout Nevada. (775) 784-1717.

The Center for Logistics Management

This center is committed to "partnering" with businesses to provide cost-effective research on a variety of logistics related issues. Graduates with a logistics major in the College of Business are heavily recruited by top national corporations. (775) 784-6814.

The Office of Technological Liaison

This office provides access to technology transfer, research facilities & equipment, research databases and industrial grants to local businesses. Below are examples of how businesses have benefited from collaborative efforts in developmental and applied research. (775) 784-6869.

School of Medicine

The Department of Microbiology developed a monoclonal antibody for diagnosing cryptococcosis. This technology was licensed to Meridian Diagnostics, Cleveland, Ohio, and is widely used in clinical labs across the nation.

Mackay School of Mines

The Clarkson Company in Sparks contracted with UNR to assist in the design & development of improving their existing line of slurry valves.

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC)

The Institute for Business and Industry

This institute prepares a wide variety of programs such as non-credit courses for productivity and quality improvement; customized on-site job training; industrial safety training; and computer training. The Industrial Training Academy develops prospective industrial technicians and journey-level employees through internships and intense in-class training. The Basic Entry-level Skill Training (BEST) is an 80-hour program to prepare for a manufacturing career in fields such as welding, production and printing. (775) 829-9000.

Desert Research Institute, (DRI)

As part of the University system, DRI conducts full-time basic and applied research for government and industry for local and international concerns. DRI scientists are on the forefront of scientific discovery and on the leading edge of the application of new technology in areas such as air quality, water quality, and power and energy. Government

State of Nevada Commission on Economic Development

This state agency works together with local development authorities and provides specific research and statistical information. CED also administers the state training program and the incentive programs, such as sales & use tax abatement and deferrals. (775) 687-4325.

Local Municipalities

The three local entities: Reno, Sparks and Washoe County work as partners with EDAWN to maintain an advantageous and competitive business climate in the Truckee Meadows. The cities and county have Community Development Departments devoted to assisting businesses through the regulatory process. The local governments are managed by city or county managers and elected councilmen or commissioners. Both cities have elected mayors.
